The Gangtok ropeway is one of the major tourist attractions of Gangtok city. It is a short ropeway ride of about one kilometer that starts at Deorali market area and goes straight up to Tashiling viewpoint which is just below the state secretariat. Between these two points, there is a third point on the Numnang road where the Ropeway stops. The ride is of about 20 minutes duration including the stops. You can start your journey from any one of the three stoppages and return to the starting point in about 20 minutes to end the ride.
The Gangtok Ropeway was built at a cost of 11.5 crores and became operational from early 2004. It soon became one of the main attractions for tourists. The ropeway ride offers an excellent view of the Gangtok town. The ropeway passes through the National Highway giving it great visibility to tourists.
The ropeway ride is normally offered throughout the day between 8 Am to 4.30 Pm. However, the actual timing may vary depending on seasonality and weather condition. During peak season the ropeway runs for longer hours than during the lean season. Each cable car can accommodate a maximum of up to 24 People at a time. There is no sitting arrangement inside the ropeway.
Which end of the Ropeway you want to reach will depend on where you are starting from. If you are near the MG Road of Gangtok, which is the popular promenade, You will do well to take the diversion of Karzi road and reach the ropeway, this is just 5 minutes walk to the ropeway.
If you are traveling from your hotel in any other part of Gangtok, you will do better to travel by a local taxi and get down at Deorali area and ask anyone for the ropeway starting point here.
The standard tour itinerary offered by Tripsy does not include the Gangtok ropeway ride. When you take the service from Tripsy we will pick you from your hotel in a Wagon R or similar small vehicle and take you to the Ropeway point and after finishing the ropeway ride we will drop you back to your Hotel. The Vehicle will be reserved for you for 4 hrs from Hotel to Hotel. The ticket charges are directly payable on the spot.
